![]() ![]() The Shema prayer was so influential and important that Jesus used it as the beginning of His answer to the “greatest commandment” question in Mark 12:28–30:Īnd one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Tradition states these three parts cover all aspects of the Ten Commandments. Later Jewish tradition developed a three-part Shema prayer that also included Deuteronomy 11:13–29 and Numbers 15:37–41. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. ![]() Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. It is found in Deuteronomy 6:4, which begins with the command to “Hear.” The whole Shema prayer, which includes verses 4-9, is spoken daily in the Jewish tradition: Shema (“hear”) is the Hebrew word that begins the most important prayer in Judaism. ![]()
